Violent Crime Rates Rise among Youth in Jacksonville Area
Violent felony crimes in and around the Jacksonville area has increased amongst juveniles as of late and fear continues to grow with each passing day. Juvenile Court Judge Henry Davis presides over anywhere from 20 to 80 cases per day in his courtroom. He claims he sees little to no respect or fear for incarceration from the juveniles that he sentences in his courtroom each day. In a report released by Florida’s Department of Juvenile Justice, manslaughter and murders committed by juveniles have decreased from 14 to 10 over the past year but other crimes such as grand theft auto and armed robbery have increased over the past year.
Armed robbery increased by 25 percent, larceny increased by 18 percent and grand theft auto increased by 26 percent. Grand theft auto is considered by many judges and law enforcement officials as the starter felony crime for juveniles. Davis also said that fights at schools in Jacksonville are becoming all too common and the majority of those fights involve close to 30 students at once. That is not a fight; it is an all-out brawl. During the 2007-08 school year, 18 guns were found at Duval County schools. So far for the 2008-09 school year, seven guns have been confiscated.
