Second AP Police Officer Arrested

Another Avon Park police officer has been arrested and charged with counts of extortion and threats of illegal aliens when making traffic stops. Alberto Perez was arrested by agents from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement on Tuesday December 2, 2008 according to Chief Matt Doughney. An investigation of the Avon Park Police Department began in June when the Florida Department of Law Enforcement began receiving complaint calls about officers were taking money from illegal aliens during traffic stops. Some victims have been forced to pay officers anywhere from $100-$500 in cash if they do not wish to receive a ticket.

One victim was charged $200 to avoid a ticket by a Puerto Rican officer that arrived at a traffic stop that was originated by a white male officer, as described in the affidavit. The victim had two passengers in his car at the time, one of them his brother, who paid the officer the $200. The Puerto Rican officer then responded with: "You owe him (brother) $200," the Puerto Rican officer allegedly told the victim, according to the affidavit.” All three victims in the car that night were able to identify both officers in a photographic lineup. The other officer’s name is Adam Wayne Willis. Willis was arrested for first degree armed burglary and grand theft.
