Insurance Goes Up for DUI Convictions
Recently, the governor of Florida signed a bit of legislation that makes insurance coverage more expensive for drivers who are convicted of DUIs. This is expected to act as a deterrent for drunk driving offenses. The Florida Justice Association and the Florida branch of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (better known as MADD) supported the change.
The insurance increases will affect both life and vehicle coverage. Those drivers who are convicted of DUIs will now have to pay a minimum of $100,000 for basic health coverage, with an additional $300,000 tacked on for every incident of bodily harm. The driver must also have an automobile insurance policy, worth at least $50,000. These increases will no doubt please insurance brokers, as drivers who often get behind the wheel while intoxicated, are usually high risk individuals to ensure.
This punishment is put on top of fines paid to the government, required ignition-interlock devices, a mark on the driver’s permanent record and even potential jail time. The severity of the punishment is dependent upon the severity of the crime- determined by whether or not any passengers or pedestrians were injured or killed by the drunk driver.
It is important to understand what penalties are standard with each varying degree of severity. For this, a driver needs to hire an intelligent, experienced DUI defense lawyer.
