Driver Charged with DUI in Crash that Injured Cyclist
Adam Betancourt, of Sarasota, has been charged with DUI in an accident that injured a cyclist across from the general aviation terminal of the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport. A Toyota Camry collided with a cyclist, 19 year old Nikolas A. Reek, throwing the cyclist anywhere from 75 to 100 feet from the spot of the collision. The accident occurred when the driver of the car made a left turn in front of an oncoming cyclist. Betancourt has been charged with DUI causing serious bodily injury and other traffic charges including no insurance, making an improper left turn, and driving without a license.
The rider of the cycle, Reek, remains in critical condition after being airlifted to Bay Front Medical Center in St. Petersburg. Reek was on his Suzuki, heading south, when Betancourt made an illegal left turn in front of him into the McDonald’s at 8164 N. Tamiami Trail. The motorcycle hit the rear of Betancourt’s car and witnesses that saw the accident claim that he had no way to avoid the Camry. If convicted, Betancourt can face suspension or revocation of his driver’s license, thousands of dollars in legal fees and lawsuit fees plus anywhere from 10 to 25 years in prison.
